Reeve stares at him for a moment, mouth hanging open just the slightest bit as if he's about to snap a comeback... and then his face just crumples.]

[And he too barks a laugh, something sharp and strained and on the verge of breaking.]

[And that's the sum of it, isn't it? Even after everything, it still wasn't enough.]
