[ it's time.

it's all been leading up to this- a heist of great importance. ren sits casually, tapping his hand on the table slowly as he and ann eat their entrees. it's good; ren's excited to try his own hand at these recipes later, since he's sure he can make it even better.

but they're not here for the entrees. not really.

he tilts his head a little to catch ann's eye, an eyebrow quirking up just a little more, looking for a sign that she's ready.

this is it. serious business. he's even dressed a little fancier than normal to really sell it all, and he's got a rush of adrenaline at the thought of it working:

trying to get a free dessert. ]

[Ann has been on the alert for the signal ever since their meals had arrived. They had come to this restaurant with one thing in mind, and one thing only— and as their fellow Phantom Thieves had come to learn, Ann Takamaki was a force to be reckoned with when she set her mind to something.

There was no way this plan of theirs could fail.

She gives him the tiniest nod in response before leaning forward against the table, resting her chin in her hand as she goes for another forkful of her pasta.]

Mmm-mmm!

[She closes her eyes tightly as she lets out a contented sigh, and though it's definitely not unheard of for her to make a big deal over food, this is a little over-the-top even for her.]

This is sooo good!

[Still, it should be enough to draw some initial attention their way...]

[ ren can't help but grin at ann's bad acting- it's fine. people will just think he's totally enamored with her excitement about food or, like, whatever.

he's just gotta lay it on even thicker than the frosting on whatever baked concoction they'll get out of this, too. ]

Not as good as you look eating it. [ he announces, leaning forward and softening his smile as he rests his elbow on the table and then his head on his hand, watching her. he tilts his head a little so the mirth in his eyes is hidden from others due to the glare on his glasses, but still visible to ann.

he twirls his own fork around in his hand mindlessly, showily before continuing. ]

Actually... [ he draws out slowly, following ann's lead to let more and more attention fall upon them. ] Speaking of. There's something important I've been meaning to ask you.

[Of course they will, because who wouldn't be enamored with her excitement about food? It's an endearing character trait!]

Oh, you're so sweet!

[The way she gushes in response is far more overdramatic than it has any right to be— probably enough to blow their cover, if anyone were really being critical of the situation, but who cares enough about two teenagers eating in a restaurant to do that?

She makes a show of setting her fork down, letting her hand come to rest just over her heart.]

Something to ask me? I wonder what it could be!

[Beneath their table, Morgana can be heard giving a pained, exasperated groan from inside the Mona-bag.]

[ ren gives the monabag(tm) a very, very gentle tap with his foot.

(oh!! oh!! you kick the mona?? JAIL. VELVET ROOM. 1000 YEARS.)

he keeps on smiling in the meanwhile, still genuinely amused and happy with ann's bad acting, food appreciation, and fellow dedication to this plan. ]

I hope it doesn't come as a surprise. [ he says, smooth as he can make it sound. ] But I've been thinking about it for a while, and, well...

[ just like ann, he lets time drag out a little- waiting for more and more people to glance over curiously (including their servers) and then, when it feels right theatrically or whatever, he sweeps himself off of the chair and onto one knee, looking up at ann dramatically and adoringly. ]

Ann... [ he says slowly, keeping to first name only in honor of, like, secreti-ish identities or whatever. ] Ever since we first met standing in the rain... I've been thinking about you. About us.

[ here he gives another DRAMATIC PAUSE to wait for the audience.

(if there's one thing ren knows how to do, it's put on a show.) ]

[The gasp Ann lets out in response can almost certainly be heard by passers-by on the street, busy crowd and all. Her eyes go wide as she raises both eyebrows, feigning the greatest look of shock she can muster— this, in fact, turns out to be pretty good, though her dialogue could certainly use some work.]

Ren!

[First names only, of course! It's an undercover operation!]

About us? You can't mean...!

[They have everyone's attention now— patrons, servers, and there's even someone sticking their head out from the kitchen to catch a glimpse of what's going on.]

[ oh, perfect. even as bad or good as ann's acting can be... the point here is that it's attracting attention, which is exactly what they want. they need to be as obnoxiously in love and engaged as possible to get the treasure- the prize- the free dessert. ]

Oh, but I do. [ he promises smoothly, reaching into his pocket in one fell swoops. he pulls out... a ring.

(a ring they've used in the metaverse for it's defensive properties, but a ring nonetheless. nobody needs to know the reason it was purchased, after all.) ]

Ann... [ he can see the people eying them out of his peripheral vision, and manages to kill a smirk before it appears on his face. ]

Would you do the honor... of spending the rest of your life with me? Of marrying me? Please say you will.

[ he looks up at her imploringly- and ren has an excellent poker face, but ann knows him enough to surely see that mirth in his eyes as they try to pull off this heist.

(he sends a silent apology to mona as he says this, of course.)

I can't stand the thought of us being apart. [ he adds, quite dramatically. ]

[That ring is pulling double duty now! For all the good it had already done them in the Metaverse, it was now serving an even greater purpose: free dessert.]

Oh, this is so— so sudden!

[She makes a great show of getting to her feet in a sweeping motion; he’s on one knee, after all, and she can hardly just sit there while he asks her a question that’s going to change the course of their entire lives! Indeed, all eyes are on them, and while Ren’s poker face is absolutely unmoving, the twinkle in her own gaze matches the mirth in his.

This is going very well.]

We’re so young, what will people think?

[Her hand is resting firmly over her heart now, and she bites at her lower lip as if to show some hesitation in the name of giving it due thought— but she bursts into a sunshine-bright smile a few heartbeats afterwards, positively beaming, as any bride-to-be should.]

Of course I’ll marry you! I can’t imagine life any other way— I never want to be apart from you!

[ oh, this is going perfectly, really. people love being nosy sometimes and getting into people’s business— enough that they might even overlook some things that might not make sense— and ann knows that well with the way she brings up her age.

a scandal! oh, now they’ve got them.

…except, ]

I don’t care about that! [ he promises dramatically.

ah. now he’s getting into it. ]

We’ll run away together, if we have to.

[ but then she says “yes” anyway, so ren gives her a matching smile. ]

Thank you… you’ve made me the luckiest mad alive. [ he insiste, intense, just as a group nearby them gasps and breaks into applause.

(he’d wink at her if he thought he could get away with it.) ]

Run away?!

[She echoes him, feigning incredulity, then steps forward to lean down and take his hand between both of her own, a heartfelt show of solidarity, batting her eyes furiously as though blinking back tears. The dramatics, the promise of scandal, the romanticism of putting their young love before anything else—

The audience is hanging on their every word, patrons and waitstaff alike, and applause has already broken out in places.]

Oh, Ren... I would go anywhere with you! I think we're both lucky.

[She locks eyes with him; even she knows better than to wink, but her smile pulls even wider.

They've got this on lock.]

We— we have to celebrate!

[ ren matches her intensity, grabbing her hands back and letting his own eyes overflow with emotion. ]

You're right. We are. [ he agrees soulfully, nodding fervently. ] We're lucky as long as we have... each other.

[ someone in the crowd lets out an ooh and then- ren nods even faster. ]

You're right, of course! Anything for my future bride.

[ he turns towards the waiter. ]

Sir! The best dessert you have, as fast as possible.

[ the man nods, looking like he sees this a lot- but remembering his training nonetheless. ]

Of course... sir. [ he hesitates only a little at it. ] Right away.

[ ren smiles; now they just need them to say it'll be free... ]

Oh! Darling, you're absolutely right, dessert is the perfect way to celebrate this!

[Really, Ann would celebrate the opening of a mailbox with dessert, given the chance, but she has to sell this! Her eyes squeeze shut as she smiles and lets out a dramatic exhale of breath, playing up the drama of the situation for the crowd— they're so close to their prize, she can almost taste it!

Victory will taste like strawberries, chocolate and cream, she thinks, if she remembers this place's advertised signature dessert correctly.]

I don't think I could be any happier than I am right now!

[There's a brief lull, just long enough for her to open one eye and get a peek at who might be watching. A well-dressed older lady nearby leans over the back of her chair and looks up at the waiter, giving him a chiding look.]

"You're not going to make these two young lovers pay for that, are you?"
