[An unkind smile pulls at one side of his mouth in response as he lowers his weapon. Of course, Reeve has manners. Of all of Shinra's various executives, he'd always been the most reasonable.]

Glad to hear you're feeling up for a chat. Lot of people on the lower floors would have figured you were a company man, in it for the long haul. You wanna tell me how you ended up here?

[He knows the basics, but he's interested in hearing it from Reeve's own mouth.]

C'mon, Reeve. Prison isn't for guys like you, now, is it?

[Reasonable Reeve may be, but a complete doormat he is not, and Reno's words cause his eyes to flash and his mouth to tighten into an even thinner line. He knows Reno is no fool, and he knows damn well that he's playing at something here.]

I would have thought Scarlet and Heidegger would be bragging to anyone who would listen about how they managed to uncover and apprehend the traitor all by themselves.

[At this point, he doesn't even bother to disguise his disgust when he says those names. Why hide it? There's no love lost there on either side.]

Although I suppose it's not quite as impressive a feat when you consider that I'm the one who blew my own cover.

Oh, you bet they are.

[To anyone who will listen, and even those who don’t show much interest. Really, Scarlet will run her mouth every chance she gets.]

I’ve heard their side of the story. Not interested in that. I’d like to hear yours.

[There’s that usual teasing edge to his voice, the one that’s a little too casual, enough to be practiced. For all he does to present himself in a certain image, Reno has always been more than meets the eye. He wouldn’t have gotten to second-in-command if he weren’t.]

Why’d you do it? Not blow your own cover, but you know. The rest of it. You knew it wasn’t gonna last.

[wro]

[He snorts.]

Did they send you here to teach me a lesson?

[It's a dumb thing to say and he knows it's a dumb thing to say, but that defiant streak - the one that instructed Tseng and the renegade Turks to steal a submarine right out from under Shinra's nose years ago - hasn't been entirely stomped out of him just yet. He certainly wouldn't put it past Heidegger and Scarlet to want to make an example of him.]

Or just to get a confession? I'm not going to deny what I did, and I don't regret it, either, so if you were expecting another answer, I'm afraid I'm going to have to disappoint you.

[Even he isn't quite sure why he's being so brazen. Maybe it's just that at this point, he's got nothing left to lose.]

You'd think that, wouldn't you? Seems like the kind of thing they would do.

[He laughs, sharply, before shaking his head. His smile is hard and mirthless, but it fades after a moment— it would be difficult for Reno to actually appear sincere in the barest sense of the word, but the usual edge that he presents himself with has softened just a little bit.]

Confession would be pretty useless, too. What good would that do anyone? You're already in prison.

[Like, how much worse can it get?]

You got balls, though. That's what surprised me. Gotta say, I respect it.

[It's probably not the reaction Reno was expecting to what is likely the closest thing to praise the Turk ever gives out, especially to someone who is technically on the opposite side right now. Reeve stares at him for a moment, mouth hanging open just the slightest bit as if he's about to snap a comeback... and then his face just crumples.]

Not enough.

[And he too barks a laugh, something sharp and strained and on the verge of breaking.]

Not enough...

[And that's the sum of it, isn't it? Even after everything, it still wasn't enough.]

[emcharge]

[The cruel curl of Reno's lips melts away; there's no longer any sense of mocking. He looks back over his shoulder, ensuring there are no guards lingering nearby, then leans against the door with one arm up over his head, his voice low as he speaks through the barred window.]

What the hell would 'enough' even look like, anyway?

[He snorts softly, shaking his head.]

Look. I'm gonna get you out of here.
